My husband Lou, the mad didgeridoo player on the right, and I settled in the wonderful
town of Portland, Oregon, and in 1989 opened Australian Originals in Portland's Old Town area, adjacent to
Portland Saturday Market, a treasure chest of arts and crafts.
We initially sold hand crafted clothing and
art that we imported from the weekend markets in the small communities surrounding my home, and didgeridoos
and aboriginal crafts from an aboriginal co-op. Gradually we began selling a wider range of Aussie products
including icons like Driza-Bone coats, Akubra hats, sheepskin boots and of course vegemite. We now also
sell products made in countries other than Australia, but they must all meet the same standards as our
Aussie gear. They must be practical, artistic or unique, of good value and of high quality. If we can't
feel good about it, we won't be selling it.
We are especially proud of our didgeridoo collection and our
association with Yidaki-doo, Australias finest supplier of didgeridoos, with a wide range from beginners
to collectors. The curator of the didge area is Lou Robinson.
